Athina Vourtsi, MD, PhD graduated from Athens University Medical School in 1993
and completed a residency in Diagnostic Radiology in 1997. In 1998 she was conferred a Ph.D. title from the University of Athens
investigating the contribution of new imaging methods in the investigation of sensorineural hearing loss.
Subsequently, she focused on breast imaging and she received training in Cornell Medical Center, Νew York.
In 1998 dr Athina Vourtsi was appointed a Scientific Coordinator in Radiology in Charge of the Dept. of Breast Imaging of the University of Athens Medical School.
In 2001, after receiving a scholarship from the State Scholarships Foundation she was engaged in post-doctoral research in Greece in the field of breast MRI.
From 2001 until the end of 2004 de Athina Vourtsi held the position of Director in the Department of Breast Imaging at Hygeia Hospital.
Simultaneously, from 2000 she founded a private breast imaging practice,
which developed successfully into a high standard and modern diagnostic center for breast diseases, called “Diagnostic Mammography.”
In 2007 dr Athina Vourtsi translated from English to Greek a short guide on European guidelines for quality assurance in the diagnosis of breast cancer for Europa Donna Hellas.
In 2012 she was inspired and founded the “Hellenic Breast Imaging Society (HBIS) in which she remained President until July 2016.
Currently, she holds the position of General Secretary and Founding President of HBIS.
In October 2012 she organized the opening ceremony of the society and served as president of the organizing committee of the 1st and 2nd national conference in Athens,
in Thessaloniki in May 2014 and president of the scientific committee of the 3rd national conference in Athens in 2017.
In September 2014 she was appointed as Honorary President of the organization of the 1st Congress of EUASSO “European Society of Surgical Oncology” in Athens.
Through out her career Dr. Athina Vourtsis has strongly supported breast cancer awareness in Greece.
Since 1999 to present she has been involved in the breast awareness activities of the Panhellenic Association of Women “Alma Zois”
and she holds a position in the scientific committee, offering voluntary work and giving lectures on the prevention of breast cancer throughout the country.
Meanwhile, between the years 2009 to 2011 the center, “Diagnostic Mammography,” was a sponsor of the Race for the Cure ® for Greece,
organized by the Panhellenic Association of Women “Alma Zois” in collaboration with the Susan G. Komen.
In 2013 she led the implementation of an awareness program called “Prevention saves lives” that was conducted in six different cities around the country,
in order to increase awareness of the disease and to educate Greek women.
One year later in September 2014, in cooperation with the Board of EUASSO and HBIS, she organized a major charity dinner,
the proceeds of which were donated to women suffering from breast cancer with financial difficulties.
At the same time she has been involved in the activities of other non-profit associations, such as the Europa Donna Hellas
and “AKOS – Cancer: Healing Body and Soul” and a member of the social committee “Women in Oncology”.
In January of 2017 she was honored by the board of directors of the Panhellenic Association of women “Alma Zois”
for her contribution of the implementation of breast awareness program in Greece.
Dr. Athina Vourtsi has published more than 38 papers in Greek and international scientific medical journals and has participated in many research programs.
Since 2009 she actively participates as a speaker and trainer in the seminars of IBUS and since 2012 she has been a faculty member of the international scientific team of IBUS.
She has presented more than 50 oral presentations in Greek and at international conferences and has given more than 135 lectures as an invited speaker.
Dr. Athina Vourtsi is a coauthor of book chapters related to breast imaging and has authored the chapter on breast diseases
currently being taught to students of the Medical School of Athens and a chapter to Breast Cancer Management for Surgeons published in 2017 by Springer.
